Born in England, all Russell ever wanted to be was a fashion designer since
the age of eight...except for a brief couple of weeks where he thought he
should be a pilot. However, clothes were what he was truly obsessed with and
passionate about.
After high school, Russell went on to college at Kingston to study clothes.
As Russell tells it, "it was like a dream come true...actually, it was
a dream come true". Upon graduating, Russell learned of an opportunity to go
to Milan to be an assistant to another English Kingston alum at a label called
Basile. On his birthday, November 24th, Russell got the job and started
packing his bags for a new life in Milan.
Three years later, in 1983, Russell met Franco Moschino just as he was
starting his own line, and was invited to be his assistant. The two had an
immediate connection...they simply clicked! At the time, the company was very
small - only five people - and there was lots of work, but he loved it. There
was not a more perfect job for Russell than working at Moschino. In all, Russell
went on to work with Moschino for a total of 8 years before following his dream
and moving to New York.
After arriving in New York in 1991, Russell joined Maklihon, the parent of "in
the NOW", to develop private label groups for leading American stores such as
Barney's, Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and others. Within two years,
Maklihon and Russell set out to develop a branded collection and to develop his
own signature collection. For the next six years, they went on to produce
innovative designs and developed a devoted following that continues to this day.
Over the years, the combination's experiences culminated in the development of
"in the NOW", a vintage inspired contemporary sportswear collection, that is as
its name says...in the NOW!
To this day, Russell continues to produce sophisticated designs with the same
subtle elegance that established him as a pioneer in the industry and has led to
his acclaim by industry veterans and established fashion publications as Vogue
magazine and Women's Wear Daily.
